My kids legs look TERRIBLE this summer! They have bruises from bumps and falls, scraped knees from learning to ride bikes and games of tag, and tons of mosquito bites! I know these are badges every kid wears, showing that they are having a great summer, but they look so uncomfortable!

Obviously, the first thing to do is try and repel the mosquitoes away, so that they don't bite in the first place - which I created this Bug OFF spray for. But it only really works when you remember to put it on your kids!

But when you don't remember to apply (or re-apply) and those pesky mosquitoes do bite or like my kids, go stomping through the forest and run into plants that you can get rashes from, this itch stix is amazing at taking down the itch, redness and rashes. I even used it on myself and it took the itch out of my mosquito bites right away and the redness and bump were gone in under 10 minutes. I love this stuff!!

I made my itch stix in a larger lip tube balm from yellowbee - 14g versus 4.5 grams. This recipe will make 3 large tubes or 11 regular lip balm tubes. I also love this little label from oil culture labels - I have a lot of different lotions and potions that I have made, so having a clear label to identify whats in the bottle is so important!

The Key Ingredients

Honey

Honey is a super-star for all of its amazing benefits. Honey is an anti-irritant, a humectant (meaning it draws moisture into the skin) and anti-bacterial.

Honey also includes:

  • amino acids
  • B vitamins
  • Calcium
  • Copper
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Manganese
  • Phosphorus
  • Sodium
  • Zinc

All these elements are needed for repair, making honey amazing for wound healing (hence why it is starting to be used in surgical bandages!)

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is amazing at moisturizing the skin, but it also calms rashes, burns and bug bites. One of it elements, lauric acid, is anti-bacterial. Coconut oil also contains most of the electrolytes found in our body, also making it super nutrient rich, which helps with healing.

Essential Oils

The rock-star of this blend in Manuka. This essential oils comes from a tree native to Australia. You may recognize the name from Manuka Honey. This is the tree that the bees get the pollen from, which makes Manuka Honey very good for the skin! Manuka Essential Oils contain those same befits to the skin - very soothing and helps support healing. Lavender and Roman Chamomile are very soothing and calming for the skin. They are both known to help with wound care, which for this blend helps with reducing inflammation, reducing the itch and redness. We also have Tea Tree and Basil Oil. These two oils are astringent and help clean the area, provide anti-microbial properties as well as supporting the skin in healing.

Recipe - Solid Itch Stix

Ingredients

Itch Soothing Essential Oil Blend

*You can also add this blend to a 10 ml roller ball and top off with fractionated coconut oil.

Solid Lotion Base

Directions

1.) Prepare a heat bath. In a medium sauce pan, fill 1/3 of the way with water and place on the stove on medium-low heat. Place a silicone mat on the bottom of the pan to prevent our mixture from over heating on the bottom.

2.) In a heat safe, pyrex measuring cup, measure, using a weigh scale, the beeswax, coconut oil, avocado oil and cocao butter. Place oil mixture into the heat bath until completely melted through - about 20-30 minutes. (Keep an eye on the heat bath to make sure it doesn't reach a hard boil - ideally we would like to keep it steaming hot to a very gentle/mild simmer - with just tiny bubbles rising from the bottom)

3.) While the oil mixture is heating through - in a 5/8 dram vial, combine the essential oils so that they can mix together and form a uniform blend. Set aside.

4.) Once melted and completely stirred together, remove the oil mixture from the heat bath and dry the outside of the pyrex cup off ( to avoid incorporating water into our oil mixture). Whisk the Honey into your oil mixture until incorporated. Once mixture has cooled down slightly, but hasn't started to become opaque or solid, incorporate the essential oil blend.

5.) Pour your mixture into your container of choice. This mixture works really well in lip balm tubes, mini deodorant style tubes and small tins. Allow mixture to set over night with lid off to prevent condensation from incorporating water into your mixture. This mixture will turn opaque as it hardens into a solid. This mixture will last for 6 to 12 months

Apply to rashes, bug bites  or irritations as required. Reapply as often as needed. Not suitable for sunburns as it will seal in the heat and make it worse!
