I recently learned a new lesson in Pain - Kidney Stones. I can, with all honestly, describe kidney stones as one of the most painful experiences of my life. The pain was so bad that I passed out at work (of all places) and ended up in emergency. The doctors and nurses were amazing and were able to figure out what was going on quickly and prescribe me some medicine to get me through this.

Anyone that knows me knows that I am not a big fan of taking prescription drugs unless I absolutely have to. They sent me home with two pain killers so that I could manage my pain at home until my kidney stone had either passed or I could get it "blasted" out. They prescribed a drug called "toradol" which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) and another called "percocet" which is a narcotic mix between oxycodone and acetaminophen.  Both of these drugs are very powerful, but the percocet is very concerning to me as it is addictive and has some pretty nasty side effects.

I'd like to clarify something: I am not opposed to anyone taking prescription drugs that needs them. Our medical system is very good at making sure that people who are in pain don't need to suffer alone. However, I believe as a patient, that we have a responsibility to work with our medical providers in trying to manage our own health care and to only use these drugs when necessary. We should be researching alternative treatments and talking with our health care team to make sure that we are getting the best care possible.

Pain is a complex experience that is difficult to  describe as it is still being researched to discover how to better assess and diagnose all types of pain and it is a very subjective experience. The very simple explanation of it, is that it is an unpleasant physical or emotional sensation that is our beings' way of communicating some form of damage to help us survive. But there are different types of pain and different ways to approach how to heal from this pain.

In my search for an answer to my pain, I turned to my essential oils to find some answers.

Essential Oils

Essential Oils for Pain

So these oils are by no means in any order or are the only oils that are good for pain.

1 Wintergreen

Wintergreen has a cortisone-like action due to its high content of methyl salicylate. It is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, anti-spasmodic and has a warming sensation.

2 Helichrysum

Helichrysum is know for tissue pain and bruising benefits. It is antispasmodic and anticoagulant.

3 Lemongrass

Lemongrass is well known for its many benefits. In terms of pain, it is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, sedative and is a known vasodilator. It helps by decreasing pain but also relaxing muscles and ligaments and bringing blood flow to the area to help with the healing process.

4 Peppermint

Peppermint has been well researched showing effective results on headaches and migraines. In one research study, peppermint was as successful at treating headaches within 15 minutes as OTC pain medications. Peppermint is analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic making it a very good choice for pain reduction.

5 Copaiba

Copaiba has similar effects on the body as CBD oil. Both plant extracts are endocabinnoids and help the nervous system relax. When the nervous system relaxes, pain is less intense, if not reduced completely.

6 Fir

Both Siberian Fir and White Fir (but not Douglas Fir) are known for their benefits with muscle pain and muscle fatigue. They are both analgesic and anti arthritic.

7 Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is known for reducing pain in muscles, especially overexercised muscles, but is works very well on pain in general. It is an aterial vasodilator, analgesic, and an anti-inflammatory.

8 Rosemary

Rosemary is known for its benefits with arthritis, among other things. It is an Aterial vasodilator, analgesic and anti-inflammatory.

9 Sandalwood/Frankincense

While not directly related to pain, they both help ease the nerves and are very calming and sedative oils. They are excellent oils to assist oils that are for pain in helping easing the nerves and relaxing the body and mind to allow for the pain to ease at the root.

10 Lavender

not only is Lavender very calming and soothing on a persons mood, it is also very calming and soothing on the physical body as well. Lavender is an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, regenerative and sedative.

  7. What you posted was very logical. But, what about this?

suppose you added a little content? I ain’t saying your content isn’t good., but suppose you added something to
possibly get a person’s attention? I mean DYI: Essential Oils For Pain –
Pure Lotus Massage Therapeutics LTD is a little boring.
You should glance at Yahoo’s home page and see how they write article titles to grab people to open the links.

You might add a video or a picture or two to grab people excited about everything’ve got to say.
In my opinion, it might make your blog a little livelier.

  8. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about
this, like you wrote the book in it or something.

I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a bit,
but instead of that, this is wonderful blog.
A fantastic read. I’ll certainly be back.
